The UD Arena is undergoing an extensive $72 million renovation of their iconic basketball facility that will feature new premier seating, an expanded concourse and changes to the building’s exterior. Athletic facilities can often be challenging to document. Large, open areas and difficult to reach spaces make traditional methods of measuring nearly obsolete. The University of Dayton and the design team called on Truescan3D to assist in this complex measurement task by providing detailed color scans of the entire building.
Truescan3D recorded approximately 650 scans and combined them into a single, color point cloud for the design team to use as a base drawing on the project. The information gathered by Truescan3D allowed the design team to start with an accurate base drawing for the project, thus eliminating many future potential issues during design and construction.
Truescan3D was selected in part due to their experience in documenting sports arenas & stadiums. Having previous experience in large, occupied spaces proved to be very beneficial to planning the project. A couple of the challenges that exist in documenting sporting facilities include the sheer size of the facility and working around a busy event schedule. The arena remained open and active through the entire project, which meant the scan technicians had to continuously coordinate to scan in unoccupied areas, rather than systematically move through the space. Not only does this affect scanning time, but also affects the registration workflow. Without proper planning and logistics, projects like this could easily have inaccuracies in the data or delays in the delivery of information. Truescan3D was aware of these potential challenges going into the project, which helped in delivering a well-managed, accurate product on time.
In many cases, clients can be intimidated by managing the size of the data delivered by scanning firms. Scanning firms will commonly deliver data that is extremely large or impossible to work with. Truescan3D is aware of the challenge of dealing with huge datasets. Larger scan projects require further processing to make the data workable from a client’s perspective. Implementing strategies that reduce the size of the point cloud without losing necessary detail is critical to the client experience. In this case, the scan of the entire arena was imported as one file into Revit or Recap on a standard laptop without issue. Truescan3D also provided cloud based bubble views from each scan position, making it easy for the design team to access and share the data.
