The construction industry is rapidly evolving with the integration of advanced technologies, like UAV surveying and drones are leading the charge. These aerial devices are revolutionizing the way projects are planned, executed, and monitored. We’ll explore the various benefits of using drones in construction, the types of tasks they can perform, and some standout projects where drones made a significant impact.
What Kinds of Tasks Can Drones Do in Construction?
Drones offer a range of functionalities that are transforming construction management and operations. Here are some key tasks drones can perform in construction:
1. Site Surveys and Mapping
Drones can quickly capture high-resolution images and generate detailed 3D maps of construction sites. TrueScan leverages this capability to produce accurate and comprehensive site surveys, enhancing planning and decision-making.
2. Progress Monitoring
Regular aerial footage allows project managers to monitor construction progress in real-time. This helps ensure that projects are on track and identify any potential issues early.
3. Inspections
Drones can safely inspect hard-to-reach areas such as rooftops or elevated structures. Our drones, equipped with laser scanning technology, offer precise measurements and detailed scans for structural analysis and quality control.
4. As-Built Documentation
By capturing detailed aerial imagery and laser scans, drones provide accurate as-built documentation, which is crucial for verifying that construction meets design specifications.
5. Volume Calculations
Drones equipped with advanced imaging and laser scanning technology can perform precise volume calculations. This is particularly useful for managing materials and resources, tracking excavation progress, and ensuring accurate earthworks.
6. 3D Modeling
Drones create detailed 3D models of construction sites and structures. TrueScan uses these models to provide visual representations of projects, aiding in design reviews, project planning, and stakeholder presentations.
7. Safety Monitoring
Drones enhance site safety by providing an overview of the construction area, helping to identify hazards and ensuring compliance with safety protocols.
By integrating these capabilities, drones are not just a tool but a transformative force in modern construction, offering unprecedented accuracy, efficiency, and safety.
9 Benefits for Using Drone Services
Incorporating drones into construction projects offers several notable benefits:
1. Enhanced Accuracy
Drones equipped with advanced sensors and laser scanning technology, like those from TrueScan, provide high levels of accuracy in measurements and mapping.
2. Increased Efficiency
Drones can quickly cover large areas and perform tasks that would otherwise take hours or days, significantly speeding up processes such as site surveys and inspections.
3. Cost Savings
By reducing the need for manual inspections and enabling more efficient project management, drones help lower overall construction costs.
4. Improved Safety
Drones reduce the need for workers to perform dangerous tasks at heights or in hazardous conditions, thereby enhancing site safety.
5. Real-Time Data
Drones provide real-time data and visuals, enabling immediate decision-making and quick adjustments to project plans.
6. Better Communication
High-quality aerial imagery and detailed scans improve communication between stakeholders by providing clear and comprehensive visual information.
7. Enhanced Quality Control
With detailed inspections and precise measurements, drones help ensure that construction meets high-quality standards and design specifications.
8. Comprehensive Documentation
Drones offer detailed and accurate documentation of construction progress and as-built conditions, which is valuable for future reference and compliance.
9. Innovative Visualization
Aerial footage and 3D models created by drones provide innovative ways to visualize and present construction projects, aiding in stakeholder presentations and project reviews.
Notable Drone Project: Powell, Ohio
At TrueScan, we take pride in our ability to deliver exceptional results using drones for 3D laser scanning. For the Powell, Ohio project we leveraged the use of aerial lidar in combination with terrestrial laser scanning to quickly document a large historic portion of the city. This data was then used to generate revit models of all the buildings, and included a model of the topography.
What We Did
For our Powell, OH project, we created detailed models of every residence, business, parking lot, public park, street, and sidewalk in the downtown core. To cover over 30 acres of residential and commercial properties comprehensively, we supplemented our terrestrial data collection with an Aerial LiDAR unit.

Challenges
Some of the challenges faced with such a large undertaking were:
- Coordinating roof access for dozens of commercial buildings posed a significant challenge.
- Residential roofs required all data to be captured from ground level only.
- Capturing large, open spaces—like parking lots and public parks—as well as the heavily wooded areas surrounding downtown, added complexity.
- To ensure efficient and comprehensive coverage of the 30-acre area, we opted to use Aerial LiDAR as the primary data collection method.
Benefits
Some of the benefits of coupling drone surveying with aerial LiDAR include:
- Unparalleled accuracy in capturing topographical data, even in dense forests.
- It can penetrate tree canopies and underbrush to gather comprehensive topographical data, which is challenging with traditional methods alone.
- The drone eliminates the need for our team to break down and set up equipment repeatedly on roofs or take numerous extra scans from multiple angles for each residential roof.
- Instead, the drone captured the entire area in less than an hour, saving significant time.
- Aerial LiDAR is highly efficient for data collection:
- Traditional ground-based surveys can be time-consuming and labor-intensive, often requiring teams to spend weeks or even months in the field.
- In contrast, Aerial LiDAR covers large areas in a fraction of the time, delivering comprehensive data sets in just a few flights.
